Oaxaca, or Oaxaca City (Spanish: Oaxaca de Juarez) is the capital and largest city of the Oaxaca state in southern Mexico. Its the area of the city is 85.48 km2 (33.00 sq mi), it is home to about 270,955 inhabited. The city is located in the Valley of Oaxaca in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains at an altitude of 1,557 meters above sea level, approximately in the middle between the Pacific and Atlantic coasts, 460 km south of Mexico City. Oaxaca City, together with the nearby the nearby archeological site of Monte Alban, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The city has many historic buildings, monuments of history and architecture. Oaxaca City has a tropical savanna climate with dry season from December to April and wet season from May to November. Santo Domingo Church, or the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary (Spanish: Santuario Nacional de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario) in the baroque style is located in the historic center of Oaxaca City. The church was constructed over 200 years between the 16th and 18th centuries. A monastery was in it from 1608 to 1857. Since 1972, Santo Domingo Church is home the Santo Domingo Cultural Center, which well known a rich collection of archaeological finds and artifacts of the state of Oaxaca.
