Guadalajara is a city and the capital of the state of Jalisco in Mexico, as well as the economic, transport and cultural center in southwestern Mexico. The city is located in the central part of the state of Jalisco, 331 km east of the resort city of Puerto Vallarta and 530 km west of Mexico City, the capital of Mexico. Its area is 150 km², it is home to about 1.4 million people. Guadalajara with the surrounding municipalities of Zapopan, Tlaquepaque, Tonala, Tlajomulco de Zuniga, El Salto, Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos and Juanacatlan forms the Guadalajara metropolitan area with a population more than 5 million, making it the third-largest metropolitan area in Mexico. The main attraction of the city is the historic downtown Guadalajara with the old buildings, such as Guadalajara City Hall, Sanctuary of Guadalupe, Palacio de Justicia, Palacio del Gobierno, The Hospicio (Museo) Cabanas. The Plaza de Armas is the main square of Guadalajara, located in the heart of the historic city centre.
