Petra is an ancient city, a monument of history and architecture, and one of the main attractions of Jordan. It is located in the narrow place of Al Siq Canyon in the Arava Valley, at an altitude of about 900 meters above sea level. Get it only through the gorges in the north and south of the valley, and from the east and west the valley is closed by sheer cliffs up to 60 m high. Petra was the capital of Idumea (Edom) and later the capital of the Nabataean kingdom. The city was located at the intersection of two important trade routes – the first connected Damascus with the Red Sea, the second Gaza city with the Persian Gulf. Today Petra includes the ruins of numerous buildings, the rocky temple of Ad-Deir, the mausoleum of Al-Khazneh and more.
