Plaza Espana (Spanish Plaza Espana) is one of the main squares of the city of Santo Domingo and one of the most beautiful places in the capital of the Dominican Republic. The square is located on the right bank of the Ozama River in the historic center of the city (Colonial City of Santo Domingo), between Mercedes and La Atarasana streets. On the square is the Alcazar de Colon Palace, which is the oldest residence of Viceroy in all of America. The palace was built from blocks of coral reefs without a single nail and at one time included 52 rooms, several courtyards and beautiful gardens. Also on the Plaza de España is the Museum of the Royal Houses located in a 16th century Renaissance mansion, founded in 1511 at the initiative of King Ferdinand II of Aragon. In the very center of the square stands a statue of Nicolas de Ovando, the Spanish conquistador, governor and founder of the Colonial City. Plaza de España is often called the “Square of Sunstroke”, it is very difficult to hide in the shade from the scorching sun, trees grow only along the perimeter of the square.
